Paul gives us pretty clear practical advice in this passage. We need to stay sharp, stay strong and stay awake. We are working the night shift, driving while everyone else is asleep. It's our job to keep the bus on the road, avoid the ditches. That means we need to stay awake.
You can't avoid the ditch if you're asleep.
